Time Trial Rules

The Course

  • The Time Trial starts at Lake Thoreau Drive (at the stop sign on the west side of the intersection.
  • Head west along the trace crossing Clyde Depot (see safety rules – it is your responsibility to observe all traffic lbaws for your personal safety as well as the safety of others) and continuing to Epley Station.
  • At Epley Station turn around in the parking lot by taking the immediate right and swinging around to the right side of the parking lot.  Turn immediately back onto the trace and head back from towards the start.
  • The finish line of the time trial is the “Stop Ahead” sign just prior to Lake Thoreau Drive.  Stopping prior to the intersection gives ample time to decrease speed and regain your composure.
  • The course is approximately 11.8 miles.  The clock time will determine all standings.
Procedural Rules
  • There is a minimum of 30 seconds between starts.
  • Warming up on the course after the first rider has started is forbidden. Warm up to the east of Lake Thoreau Drive.
  • There are three methods allowed for starting.
    • You can have someone hold your bike allowing you to be clipped in with both feet (if someone is willing to assist).
    • You may steady yourself with the stop sign allowing you to be clipped in with both feet.
    • You may start unassisted from a standing position.
    • Rolling starts are prohibited.
  • No drafting is allowed.  USAT rules apply when passing and being overtaken – (i.e..  you most maintain a minimum of three bike lengths between bikes, you have 15 seconds to complete a pass once it is initiated).
  • Ride through the finish line and continue riding in the same direction so as not to interfere with riders finishing behind you .
  • To avoid congestion on the Trace, return to Jackson Station following completion of the time trial.  Do not go back onto the course while riders are still competing.
Safety Guidelines
  • You are responsible for your own safety. The Trace is not closed for the event. You are deemed to be a regular trace user.
  • Ride to the right as you would when normally using the trace.
  • Announce your presence with a “Pass on Left” when overtaking pedestrians, other cyclist and time trial participants.
  • Respect the rights of other trace users. Allow plenty of room when passing pedestrians or other cyclists. This is a multi-use pathway.
  • When passing another TT participant, do not pass to the right. Maintain a speed sufficient to get clear of the other participant.
  • Do not ride with your head down. Pay attention to your surroundings.
  • When approaching all intersections you must check in both directions well in advance to determine whether it is safe to cross. If in doubt, err on the side of caution.
  • Helmet use is mandatory.
